Not Just a Housing Program: Life Skills, Case Management, Housing Search & Work/School Requirements
- In addition to housing, the TH program assists women in becoming self-sufficient and independent. This is accomplished through required weekly/bi-weekly case management meetings, where the TH Coordinator and the participant meet to discuss, develop, and work on the participant’s financial, housing, vocational, and other goals aimed at becoming self-sufficient.
- By the sixth month in TH, participants are required to be employed and/or attending job skills training, adult education, or college classes for a minimum of 20 hours/week.
- Another TH program component is Life Skills Training. Participants attend at least (2) two classes each month. Classes are geared to the participant’s needs/goals in becoming self-sufficient and are also offered to the public. Some examples of class topics include time management, child development, personal development, red flags in relationships, home maintenance, budgeting, health issues, car maintenance/repair, etc. Childcare is provided for these classes.
- TH Participants are also required to sign-up with Missoula Housing Authority. This requirement assists participants with obtaining permanent housing upon completion of the TH program.
Additional Requirements
- Yard maintenance: participants mow their lawn, trim weeds, water, and remove snow if living in one of the duplexes (YWCA provides equipment). Participants in the apartments also maintain their entryways.
- Guests/Curfew: due to funding guidelines participants are not allowed to have overnight guests for more than three days per month unless they are visiting from out of town. In town visitors must leave by 12:00 am Sunday-Thursday nights and 2:00 am Friday and Saturday nights. Notice must be given to the TH Coordinator if out of town visitors are staying overnight in the unit (10 days being the maximum length of stay).
- Inspections: Participant residences are inspected monthly/bi-monthly by the TH Coordinator for maintenance needs.
- Domestic Violence Situations: If a participant has been involved in an abusive relationship, their abuser is not allowed to know the location of the TH residence. Custody/visitation must take place at another location.
