Racial Justice Initiative

The YWCA believes racism is a woman’s issue. We can’t empower all women until we eliminate racism. Women of color we serve in our other programs have a harder time finding permanent housing and employment, getting an education, and accessing health care than white women.

YWCA Missoula’s racial justice award-winning social marketing campaign is used as a model for other YWCAs in mostly white communities like ours. The messages are intended to be positive, powerful, and accessible, and to be far-reaching in impact. We are always looking for your feedback and ideas for future ads. For more information, or to share your story about racism, email Elizabeth Harrison.

The goals of the social marketing campaign are: 1) to raise community awareness about the existence of racism, prejudice and bias in ourselves and in society at large; 2) to reduce prejudicial attitudes and beliefs; 3) to encourage communication across ethnic and cultural lines; and, 4) to empower white people to take action to interrupt prejudice and to be pro-active allies to people of color.
